SKMC Fall 2014 Gear List and Race Rules

 

Items to be carried at all times by your team:

1.  cell phone

2.  First aid kit consisting of at least these items:

     4 bandaides

     1 bandage , which is at least 4 inches by 4 yards long

     4 pain killers , such as aspirin or ibuprofen, etc.

 3. Compass   

 

Individual Mandatory Gear

1.  1 canoe per 2 person team, 2 canoes per 4 person teams.   Solos can bring a kayak.   If you don't have a canoe , you may rent them for 30$ per canoe , please look at the registration page.   Bring paddles and pfds for the team.   Single blade or double blade.

If you are renting canoes , your pfds and paddles are included, however you may bring your own if you wish.

 

 

2. One bike per racer. Mt. bike is recommended . No tandems please. Most racers will use a Mt bike with faster trail tires.   However you may NOT bring a Mt bike and a road bike.  One or the other only.

Red blinking light for rear of bike please.

Must wear bike helmets on your bike.

 

3. One compass per racer

 

4.  At least one camel back per racer or at least 2 water bottels per racer.  There will be areas during the race where you will have access to water.

 

5.  Bring enough food to last you at least 8 hours of racing.

 

6.  Safey glasses for navigation.  There will be areas where the woods will be thick.

 

7.  Bright colored clothing tops.  Bright orange , red or bight green are all ok. We want the racer to be noticed not only in the woods but also on the bike for your safety. Orange and red would be best in the woods.

 

8.  Gear that you feel you will need to spend time in the woods.  Insect repellent, long pants, etc.

 

9.  Map case, maps are not waterproof.

 

10. Writting utensil

 

11. NO GPS or similar devices can be  used....just a compass please.

 

12.  BLINKING RED LIGHT FOR REAR OF YOUR  BIKE PLEASE.

 

13. lock for your bikes or canoe if you are not renting canoes.....if one lock will take care of the teams bikes, that will be ok also.

 

Gear is event specific.  Example: You will not be required to carry your pfd for the entire race, but just use it for paddling.


RULES FOR THE SKMC

 

 

1. Competitors must always remain within 100 feet of teammates & within visual contact.

2. All team members must check in together at each checkpoint and TA.

3. At TAs, teams much check in and out with the volunteer.

4. If one member must leave the course, they must do so at a  TA and notify race management. Incomplete teams may continue unranked.

5. Any team withdrawing from the race must notify a “live” person by checking in with a

TA volunteer or by calling the race director.

6. Any short-coursed team will rank lower than full course teams, regardless of number of

CPs obtained.

7. Race number must be visible on all team members at all times. Attaching the race number to a pack is ok.

8. Teams must punch passports in the correct space at each CP. All punches must be legible.

If race staff cannot distinguish one punch from another, it will not be counted.

9. The director may choose to use a ALL PUNCH system.  If a CP has an ALL PUNCH label on it, punch the passport AND all team members must punch their wristbands.

 Wristbands must be worn only on the wrist. Wristband punches

must be legible, and separate from each other.

10. Solo racers do not need to wear or punch a wristband.

11. Teams must complete each leg of the race in the order listed unless directed otherwise by

race staff.

12. Teams may not obtain CPs from a previous leg of the race once they have started the next leg.

13. Teams that miss CPs will be ranked after teams that obtain all CPs. In the case of a tie,

the team who obtained the most points in the shortest period of time is the winner.

14. The race director will set up a RACE CUT OFF time, any team that comes in after the race cut off time , will lose ONE POINT for every minute after the cut off time.

15. Race officials reserve the right to alter time cut-offs or the course itself to accommodate changing condition

16. Mandatory gear must be carried at all times and will be checked on the course.

17.  No GPS or similar devices will be allowed.  You must navigate by compass only.

18. PFDs must be worn at all times while paddling.

19. Bicycle helmets must be worn at all times during the biking sections and when

specifically directed by race officials.


20. Flashing rear bike light should be on at all times while road biking.   They do not need to be on while Mt biking.

21. NO LITTERING! Leave no trace!

22. Use of cellular phone is for emergencies only. No other use is allowed.

23. Any protest must be filed to the race director within one hour of the team’s finish and will be

reviewed by the Race Committee.

24.  If a team witnesses an emergency situation on the course with their team or another team.  This emergency will take precedence over the race.  Please contact the race director along with 911 so that the race director can and will get emergency personnel to your location
